An unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Gorges du Verdon

Would you like to walk along the bottom of Europe’s largest canyon?

We do!

This dream has a name: the Blanc-Martel trail, the legendary route of the Gorges du Verdon. These grandiose walls may seem inhospitable, crushed by the sun and dotted with steep passages. But their raw, spectacular beauty soon makes you forget your fears.

Better still, it transforms every difficulty into a moment of wonder, in an almost mystical atmosphere.

So we put on our hiking boots and headed for this mythical trail and its exceptional panoramas: limestone cliffs hundreds of meters high, secret caves, turquoise torrents and hidden pebble beaches… So many wonders offering an idyllic playground for the thrill-seeking adventurer.

A legendary trail in the heart of the canyon

Nicknamed France’s Grand Canyon, the Verdon Gorge is the most spectacular of all the gorges. Along 16 km of winding paths, hikers can immerse themselves as close as possible to the river – in fact, this is the only itinerary that allows them to descend into the bowels of the Verdon. Every year, thousands of curious visitors come to rub shoulders with this giant of rock and water, but once you’re down there, it’s as if you’re alone in the world in the face of immensity. The Verdon flows through breathtaking scenery, where eagles and vultures soar in azure skies above dizzying cliffs. It’ s impossible to remain unmoved by this natural theater sculpted over thousands of years, or to resist the thrill of being part of it for a day.

To follow the Blanc-Martel trail is also to follow in the footsteps of the Verdon pioneers. In 1905, famous speleologist Édouard-Alfred Martel and his guide Isidore Blanc, a schoolteacher from the village of Rougon, dared to explore the gorges in their entirety for the first time.

In those days, there were no marked trails or bridges: only their courage to brave the rapids and impassable walls. Their feat paved the way, and in the 1920s the Touring Club de France finally developed this daring passage. From 1926 to 1928, metal ladders were laid in the rock at Brèche Imbert, and tunnels already dug were used for an earlier, aborted hydraulic project.

The result? A spectacular, historic trail, named Blanc-Martel in honor of the two adventurers, which today offers nature lovers an unforgettable adventure deep in the gorges. Every step echoes this story : we humbly advance, conscious of reliving a feat from another time.

In this article, we give you all the information you need to prepare for your adventure on the Blanc-Martel trail: level of difficulty, detailed itinerary, equipment to bring, points of interest… you’ll know everything you need to make the most of this legendary hike!

Ideal for:

➡ Experienced hikers.

➡ Adventurers looking for an immersive and challenging trail.

➡ Lovers of wild, grandiose landscapes.

⚠️ Not recommended for:

Young children (-8 years), due to duration and technical passages.

➡ People prone to vertigo, although the most exposed passages are secured by railings.

➡ Those with mobility problems, particularly due to the many steps and uneven paths.

❌ No dogs allowed!

The Sentier Blanc-Martel is not dangerous in itself, but it does require caution and vigilance on certain stretches:

Exposed passages: some sections run along the void, but safety barriers are present to limit risks.

Metal stairs and ladders: some steep descents require sure-footedness and good stability.

➡ S lippery stones and rocks: Especially after rain, be aware of rocky areas where grip may be reduced.

Water level variations: don’t get too close to the banks of the Verdon, as the flow may increase suddenly depending on water releases from upstream dams. Swimming is strictly forbidden.

➡Obscure tunnels: Two tunnels line the trail(100m and 670m). A torch or cell phone light is essential to traverse them safely.

❌ Swimming in the Verdon is strictly forbidden and dangerous – numerous syphons and other hydraulic phenomena can lead to drowning.

Warm up before you set off: 500m of cumulative vertical drop can come as a surprise if you’re not used to hiking in varied terrain.

Opt for suitable footwear: Favor hiking boots with good grip to secure your footing on rocky areas.

Remember to check the weather: If it’s hot, set off early in the morning to avoid the hottest hours. After rain, double your caution on slippery rocks.

Hydrate regularly: No drinking water points on the trail, plan on at least 3 liters of water per person.

Equipment required 🎒

While the Sentier Blanc-Martel promises awe-inspiring scenery and an immersive experience, it’s also a demanding hike that requires proper preparation. Good clothing, the right equipment and optimal management of your supplies will be your best allies in making the most of the trail.

We’re in the mid-range mountains, and the trail is subject to sudden weather variations, which can change walking conditions in a matter of moments. Always exercise caution and plan ahead for your hike.

The trail alternates between rocks, metal steps and slippery passages, requiring shoes with excellent grip and support.

Best of all :

✔ Low or mid hiking boots, lightweight and robust.

✔ A notched sole to grip rocks and prevent slipping.

✔ Good breathability for comfort throughout your walk.

Avoid:

➡ Classic sneakers, which offer little support and can slip on rocky portions.

➡ New shoes never worn: risk of injury and blisters.

With temperature variations possible throughout the day, adopt the three-layer strategy to stay comfortable whatever the conditions.

✅ Upper body

✔ Breathable T-shirt (avoid cotton, prefer technical materials).

✔ Lightweight fleece for mornings and cool areas.

✔ Windproof and waterproof jacket, useful in windy or rainy conditions.

✅ Lower body

✔ Hiking pants or shorts depending on the season.

✔ Technical socks ideal if you want to avoid blisters.

❌ Not recommended

➡ Denim or cotton clothing, which retain moisture and dry slowly.

➡Lamp: Mandatory for crossing the dark tunnels on the course (100m and 670m).

➡Walking poles: Useful for steep descents and to save your joints.

➡Phonewith external battery: To stay reachable and use a GPS map in case of urgent need (Beware of many passages where there is no phone network so impossible to stay reachable).

💡 A waterproof bag to protect your phone, map and papers in case of sudden rain.

🚰 Water: Allow at least 3 liters per person, as there are no drinking water points on the trail.

🍫 Energy snacks: Cereal bars, dried fruit, dark chocolate or fresh fruit.

🥪 Lunch: A light but nourishing picnic for a pleasant break in the heart of nature.

First-aid kit: With bandages, antiseptic, elastic bandage and paracetamol.

➡ S un protection: Caps, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential, especially in the height of summer – using non-polluting sunscreen would be ideal for preserving the biodiversity of rivers and lakes.

Warm clothing: Even in summer, it can be cool in the morning or in the tunnels.

Map or GPS app: Always useful as a complement to trail signage.

Hiking shoes with good grip.

Clothing adapted to temperature changes.

✔ Sun protection equipment and flashlight.

✔ S ufficient hydration and energy snacks.

First-aid kit for minor incidents.

Detailed Itinerary 🥾

The Sentier Blanc-Martel is a true adventure through some of the most grandiose landscapes in the Gorges du Verdon. With its dizzying metal staircases, mysterious tunnels and breathtaking vistas, every kilometer holds its share of surprises and emotions.

1️⃣ Departure from Chalet de la Maline

⏱️ 45 minutes

The trail starts at the Chalet de la Maline, a strategic starting point offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the Gorges du Verdon. This mountain refuge is an excellent spot for a last stop before setting off on the trail. Dry public toilets are available.

💡 After the start, and during the 6-hour walk, there’s no way to satisfy your cravings. So make your own arrangements before you set off, or find something to do so as not to pollute the trail. When you arrive at the parking lot, you’ll again have access to public dry toilets!

🌄 Take a moment to admire the panorama from the terrace before beginning the descent.

2️⃣ Descent to the Verdon – Significant negative vertical drop

⏱️ 45 minutes

From the very first kilometers, the descent is steep and winding, so take your time and admire the view. The trail gradually plunges towards the Verdon, revealing breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs.

This first section is pleasant, but quickly puts the knees to the test. At Carrefour des Cavaliers, a 20-minute round trip takes you to a magnificent viewpoint via the Estellié footbridge, rebuilt after the gigantic flood of 1978.

⚠️Some passages are rocky and slippery. You’ll be glad you followed our equipment recommendations => Link to section

3️⃣ Le pré d’issane

⏱️ 2h

The hike continues over a long, relatively flat section, skirting the Verdon and offering the chance to observe several caves – Baumes ( definitions ) on the left.

The path then crosses a scree slope equipped with a metal passage to facilitate progress, before beginning a fairly steep ascent. After crossing the Guègues scree, you reach the Carrefour de La Mescla.

➡ O ptional but recommended fork – A 30-minute round trip to the Mezcla that lets you admire a unique natural spectacle: the mixing of the waters of the Verdon and Artuby rivers. Ideal for a picnic break!

💡 mezcla means “mixture” in Provençal, which brings to mind the salad “Mesclun”, which is a mixture of salads.

4️⃣ La Bréche Imbert and the stairs – An impressive passageway

⏱️ 45 minutes

After a 45-minute walk, you’ll reach one of the highlights of the route:

The climb to Brèche Imbert is tough, but the effort is amply rewarded by the spectacular view from the top of the stairs and from the belvedere. If you’re lucky, you may even spot vultures soaring over the cliffs.

➡ Access to the lookout from a short passage on the rock to your right, requires sure-footedness and the strength to hold on at arm’s length, such is the steepness.

Next comes an impressive section: the descent via the metal staircases. With over 250 suspended steps, this aerial section demands concentration and caution, but offers an unforgettable experience.

➡ For people with vertigo, the absence of risers means these stairs can be descended in reverse if necessary.

The Brèche Imbert, over 150 metres long, is a real natural barrier to cross. The 80-metre-long metal staircase allows you to pass through this rocky fault.

💡 In 1928, they were ladders. Work was carried out from 2011 to 2013, transforming them into staircases.

⚠️ Take your time and enjoy the exceptional panorama offered by this suspended passage.

5️⃣ Les Plages du Verdon – A refreshing riverside break

⏱️ 1 hour

After climbing the stairs, the path joins the banks of the Verdon, offering a number of secluded natural beaches, perfect for a well-deserved break. The sound of the water and the majestic cliffs create a soothing setting.

Swimming is prohibited due to strong currents and possible water releases upstream.

The trail continues towards the Escalès cliffs. After about an hour and a half’s walk, you’ll reach the Trescaire lookout, from where you can admire the vertiginous 400-metre-high cliff. Shortly afterwards, you’ll pass through the Trescaire Tunnel.

6️⃣ Les Tunnels du couloir Samson – A crossing in the dark

⏱️ 30 minutes

One of the most unusual parts of the trail: tunnels cut into the rock! The longest, the Tunnel de Baou, measures 670 meters and requires a headlamp for safe progress.

After 400 metres, an opening in the rock offers a spectacular view of the Verdon and the gigantic Baume aux Pigeons.

💡 The atmosphere is cool and damp, in stark contrast to the heat outside.

7️⃣ The Samson Corridor – the monumental entrance to the gorge

⏱️ 12 minutes

Shortly before the end of the route, the Couloir Samson rises like a natural gateway to the depths of the canyon. Framed by massive cliffs, this passage offers a fascinating view of the Verdon’s unique geology.

🌄 Don’t forget to look up, as the rock formations are particularly impressive!

💡 Legend has it that Samson tore through the rock, creating the canyon in the process, in order to rescue Delilah, held captive in the fortress of Rougon. From Point Sublime, you can see his silhouette, drawn naturally into the cliff on the left bank.

8️⃣ Final ascent to Point Sublime – A last effort!

⏱️ 35 minutes

The final section of the trail requires an extra effort: a gradual staircase climb leads up to Point Sublime, the classic finish point of the route. Despite the fatigue accumulated, the final panorama is a real reward after this several-hour adventure.

Breathtaking views of the canyon from the Point Sublime lookout.

Recommendations 💡

The Sentier Blanc-Martel is at its best in spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). These seasons offer mild temperatures, pleasant light and landscapes sublimated by spring blossoms or the flamboyant hues of autumn.

☀️ In summer, the heat can be very trying, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C, not to mention the influx of tourists during the high season. If you’re hiking in July and August, it’s best to leave when the shuttles are first available, as the gorges are still bathed in cool air.

❄️ In winter, some sections of the trail may be frozen and difficult to access in severe weather conditions. The shuttle service is closed and cabs are not widely available.

💡 Choose to hike between April and October, avoiding the peak season ofJuly and August.

The climate in the Gorges du Verdon can be capricious, with sudden thunderstorms making the trail dangerous.

Thunderstorms: If thunderstorms are forecast, postpone your outing. Rain makes rocks slippery and metal stairs dangerous.

After heavy rain: Some sections of the trail may be difficult to cross.

💡 Always check the weather forecast the day before and the morning of your departure.

The Sentier Blanc-Martel runs through a protected natural area within the Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon. Respecting the environment is essential to preserving this natural jewel.

Take all your garbage with you as there is no collection service on the trail. as a reminder there are no toilets available along the trail either, so please be considerate.

Don’t pick plants or disturb wildlife.

Fires and gas stoves are strictly forbidden, as are bivouacs and camping in the canyon.

Bivouacking or camping in the Parc Naturel du Verdon is strictly forbidden.

The mobile network is very limited on the trail, especially in the more incised areas of the gorge.

What to expect:

✔ A 100% charged phone.

✔ An external battery, especially if you use your phone for mapping.

✔ A paper map or offline GPS application.

💡 Don’t just rely on your phone in an emergency, plan ahead.

Ideal hiking in spring and autumn.

Always check the weather, watch out for thunderstorms and rain.

Never stray from the trail, inform a loved one of your itinerary.
