Senez-en

This 17th-century fountain features four sculpted male heads at the four cardinal points. Each is differentiated, as if to symbolize the geographical orientation it designates.

Senez’s historic fountain gave its name to the square where it was built. Two factors lead us to date it from the second quarter of the 17th century, although we can’t be certain of this in the absence of archival documents. Firstly, its stylistic similarity to other dated fountains of the same type (notably in Moriez, 1644). In addition, the construction of the seminary in 1644 by Bishop Louis Duchaine, the oldest recorded building in Senez, marks the beginning of the real urbanization of the village and the necessary amenities that followed, such as the development of a hydraulic network to ensure a constant supply of water. A pre-formed concrete washtub had been added to the original basin in the early 20th century; it remained in place until the late 1990s, when the square was renovated to include the fountain and surrounding buildings.
The fountain comprises a circular limestone basin and a column carved from the same mineral.
