Colmars celebrates this tragedy in memory of its inhabitants, who paid for it with their lives. Torchlight procession and account of the fire, followed by the burning of the ramparts.
On Monday, the 8th of August 1672, at 9 or 10 o’clock in the evening, a few individuals were retiring to their homes when they spotted a large fire near the main church. They ran to the bells to ring their alarm bells and call for help; but the wind rose so ill-timed that, despite the assistance that the inhabitants of the neighboring hamlets were willing to give, the fire passed from street to street (which were very close together), and in less than 3 or 4 hours it engulfed the whole of this unfortunate town in an inferno. (extract from Mgr Villeserin’s account).
