Louis Gabriel Prosper Demontzey was a French Eaux et Forêts engineer, born in Saint-Dié on September 21, 1831 and died in Aix-en-Provence on February 21, 1898. He was one of the main engineers who experimented with and implemented mountain reforestation and torrent erosion control techniques. He was responsible for the development of the mountain land restoration department within the Eaux et Forêts administration, and for the massive reforestation of the Southern Alps.
