A former bishopric on the banks of the river Asse, Senez is a village steeped in history, with a rich and well-preserved cultural heritage. As a stopover on the imperial road, Napoleon stopped off to visit the cathedral, now a listed monument.
Situated on the left bank of the Asse, the village is accessible via a superb stone bridge dating from 1770. A former bishopric until the French Revolution, the village is home to numerous archaeological remains. Its imposing Romanesque cathedral, listed as a Monument Historique, contains extraordinarily well-preserved furnishings: tapestries from Flanders and Aubusson, stalls and altarpieces from the 16th and 17th centuries…
Then, as you wander through the village lanes, you’ll pass a listed fountain, the former seminary, the old lavender distillery…
For hikers, the village is crossed by the imperial road linking Castellane to Digne les Bains.
